Funnily enough I was talking to a friend of mine who refs and he explained that its all about the distance the player is from the ball. Obstruction still exists as a rule but only if the ball is not within playing distance.

It's just the French/Welsh/most European languages way of structuring sentences.

In reality that's just an American take on it and has f-all to do with us tbh
