Now, in English, the letters x and z are used interchangeably at the start of words. So someone who wants to write Xi may write Zi, for no other reason than thats what they are used to. It may not represent the sound in pinyin, but as far as I can see, the original tweet was written in English and if you think Rudy Guilani is aware that the pinyin sound for x and z are different, then so be it.

Calling it a misspelling is you giving Giuliani the benefit of the doubt about how he thinks his name is spelled and made a mistake - rather than the fact that Giuliani has got form for being racist towards the Chinese and called the President an even more stereotypically sounding Chinese name.

They're not approximations. Another example may be 'fen'. The pronunciation here is like someone from Yorkshire saying 'fun' - it's 'u' sort of halfway towards 'oo'.

So it doesn't matter that in English 'x' and 'z' make similar sounds - and even then, only sometimes. Rudy isn't making a mistake because of this (we know that because no one calls him President Zee). He's just dogwhistling by spelling his name wrong, in the same way that senator at a trump rally got Kamala Harris' first name deliberately wrong three times and said "whatever the hell it is' when he'd worked with her on committees and knew exactly how to say it.

It's only two letters for one of the world's most powerful men, of course he knew.

Youre still not taking on board the point I am making.

Perhaps Zi was written instead of Xi in the same way Zena and Xena may be used interchangeably, with Giuliani not appreciating that in Pinyin Chinese Zi and Xi are not the same, in the way that Xena and Zena are in English.
