Jonny Williams has admitted that he didn’t expect to be released by Cardiff City this summer and doesn’t know why the decision was made

The attacking midfielder was only signed by the Bluebirds in January and whilst he struggled to make an impact in the months that followed, there was an expectation that Williams would stick around for next season.

That’s after boss Mick McCarthy hinted that the Welsh international would play a more prominent role following Harry Wilson’s departure.

However, the club announced that Williams had left when they confirmed their released list last month and the player told Wales Online that he was hurt by the news and it’s certainly not something he had prepared for.

“Originally I thought I was staying so it came as a surprise to me. At the same time, football doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been in the game for 10 years and experienced a lot of ups and downs, so I can take it on the chin and move on.

“It was disappointing how it panned out at Cardiff because I was excited about the move. I’m not sure, I wasn’t completely told what happened. Someone’s taken the decision so that’s that and I move on.”

As much as I'm glad that he wasn't given a new contract, I don't like the way he seems to have been treated by the club (with the complete lack of communication).

He seems like a lovely guy and deserved better than finding out at the same time as the general public that he's unemployed.

He can feel hard done by, I guess. Brought in in January, in a major European tournament and bombed out before it starts. I don't think he was worth a contract, but there are ways to treat people. This has the hint of a cost-cutting exercise to me.

It suggests a bleak financial situation. I know managers have to spin things but Mick is quite plain speaking and seemed quite genuine when talking about him. Tan et al probably can't justify the wage going forwards knowing what they know.

He does seem to have been treated shabbily. Poor show as the Sunderland documentary made him look quite emotionally brittle. Really hope he gets a club as he seems a lovely bloke.

Imagine your manager at work saying publicly that you were in line to replace another member of staff that was leaving... And then the next thing you know you're out of the company.

It's definitely cost-cutting imo and I can get on side with that if the finances at the club are Kentucky Fried Fucked, but what I can't accept is them treating players like commodities instead of human beings...

Which appears to be what has happened with Williams.

I could be well off the mark but the evidence looks pretty damning from where I'm sat.

Fuck em, they earn mega money compared to us.
I care about them as much as they care about me.

He must've been almost as surprised as when he was offered a contract at Cardiff!

Good luck Jonny.
