Has anyone else found it slightly more difficult to get cash as time goes on?

Was at Tesco Extra on Western Av last week and they used to have three operational cashpoints outside the store. Now two are permanently blocked off and the third was out of order.

In Llandaff North village the cashpoint in the Co-op is regularly out of order, the one outside the carpet shop is never on these days which leaves the one at the Texaco garage, which charges close to £2 for cash withdrawal.

A number of places are cashless too now. I wasn't able to pay cash at Chopstix in St Davids and a couple of other places too.

Is this a conscious effort towards a cashless society?

Quite ironic given the fact gypos exist within a cash based economy.

Definitely harder. I think it reflects that cash machines are significantly less profitable now rather than any kind of conspiracy

In contrast, some shops are still accepting cheques over here. The French are unwilling to give them up as they are free to use. If you want a debit card for your current account there is an annual fee of about £100.

If you want to top up your electric or gas cards it's a nightmare because they will only take cash so you have to drive around Barry trying to find a cashpoint that works or has cash in it.

Yep, every time I go to get cash it seems a machine is out of cash or out of order. Sometimes the only ones working in my town are the ones where you have to pay £2 just to access your money. I never do that, but amazing how many people do.

Can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque. Maybe a banker's cheque when I bought my car in 2013. I did need Postal Orders a few years ago too, can't remember what for.

Life is full of hassles like that for working class people and that is a great example of one of those daft little hurdles that wouldn't even occur to most people.

They say that money can't buy happiness but it sure as shit saves you from a lot of misery.

I was thinking this morning, when driving through town, about the two weeks I spent on work experience at Midland Bank in 1991. The most exciting job in that two weeks was when I had to put a brick full of fivers into the cash machine. Had to write a big red X at the top of the stash before putting it in. Also having access to all the locals' cash balances on a computer printout. :hehe:

Slightly different, but it is disenfranchising people, and will even affect voting as we need to produce ID like a Driver's licence or passport at the next election.

Stop the Votes.

Bet they partially back down after a week sane as we did.

Once they realise they are selling less, then they will back down. I'm just thinking of when I was a kid watching City, I'd use my pocket money to get a programme. Birthdays I'd have a tenner and buy old programs or a scarf. It's experiences like that that are being lost.

There's a sizeable minority of people who want to use cash, which is fair enough. When they make their displeasure known they'll reopen a few places you can use cash. The Jacks should have researched how badly its gone down elsewhere and how it's nearly always quickly reversed

By driving cash out of use, it becomes harder to operate a black economy, so tax evasion becomes that much more difficult. That has to be an upside.

Been like that for quite a while.

There are definitely upsides. Less theft by dodgy salespeoplebeing an obvious one and more traceability (easier to analyse your spending) being obvious ones.

I find contactless incredibly convenient but am of the view cash should remain an option - especially if you're serving a wide demographic of people.

With the rise of people wafting cards at machines, plenty of theft opportunities.

My wallet was stolen, didn't realise it, cards used to buy fags. Got wallet back - scrote dumped it in a post box after I'd blocked the cards.

Despite it being at a specific store, with a specific time (confirmed with bank), police didn't give a toss since I got the money back.

It's just shifting crime opportunities around; I've got all my cards setup up so need to manually enter PIN. Bit of a bugger when drunk...

Of course, that can be an issue but if you lost your wallet with loads of cash in it you'd be screwed too. Sad, how shite the police are now on a lot of crimes.

The view is it's a victimless crime since bank reimbursed me. Not sure how it works, but if they've reclaimed that money from the retailer then the retailer has been robbed.

I wouldn't even mind, but being given the exact store location and the exact time - 5:40am! - hardly like there would be a mass of suspects.
