Season 1939-40 - League Division 3 South (Abandoned)

Cyril Spiers decides on team strengthening despite the international situation. The services of favourites like Bill Bassett, George Nicholson and Les Talbot are all lost when they are transferred away, and in come Jimmy Cringan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sam Booth from Port Vale, Ernie Marshall from Sheffield United, Trevor Morris from Ipswich Town, George Sabin from West Bromwich Albion, Ernie Sykes from Birmingham City, Cyril Reid from Newport County, and Laurie McPhillips from Albion Rovers. Later on Tommy Anderson and Jimmy Myers both join from Wolverhampton Wanderers. A famous name in the form of Wilfred Wooller, a Wales rugby international player and county cricketer, signs amateur forms. There is just time for 3 matches before Britain enters the Second World War and professional football is suspended. The club immediately make assistant trainer Jack Kneeshaw redundant as they start to make their preparations for the war years.

Season 1939-40 - Wartime Competition

Most of the playing staff are conscripted into the armed forces, so Cyril Spiers starts making up teams to play mainly friendlies. These sides are largely made up of young local amateurs and guest players whose commitments allow them to be available for which ever local side happens to be playing. Cyril Spiers manages to keep a small core of professional players available for selection and the club play a number of friendlies before embarking on a season in the South-West League. Availability of players is a major problem though, and some results are somewhat unrepresentative. The Welsh F.A. decides to carry on with the Welsh Cup and City enter, winning against Ebbw Vale in the fifth round. By the time that the 6th round is played though, City have lost most of their players and it is something of an unrecognisable team that draws at home to Newport County. The replay is played at Rodney Parade, the home of Newport Rugby Club, as Somerton Park has been requisitioned for use by the armed forces, and a somewhat unrepresentative City side is trounced 0-5. Shortly afterwards Newport County decide to disband until the War is over. The season sees no less than 56 players appearing for the club, and one of these is Billy James, who makes his debut.
