By 1943, a number of local footballers have been placed into reserved occupations and Cyril Spiers makes moves to try and re-establish a small group of regular players. With that objective in mind he goes out and signs Fred Stansfield, Arthur Lever, Billy Rees and Colin Gibson, all from local sources, all players that are to emerge in one of City's greatest sides once the war has ended. City's post war 'local heroes'side begins to take shape.
