One of the finds that the club made during the Second World War, a left winger come occasional inside forward who was a mainstay goalscorer during those difficult times and was rewarded with a professional contract once full time soccer resumed. One of the stars of the 'local heroes' side of 1946-47, he saw City promoted before an £11,000 offer tempted City to cash in on a player that had cost them nothing. Whether it was a good move for Cardiff City could be said to be a moot point as he went on to stay 10 seasons at Maine Road, playing 349 League matches, scoring 73 goals. During this time he also won 22 Wales international caps. In September 1958, winding down his football career, he went to Stockport County and played 25 League matches in his final season, scoring 5 times, before returning to Maine Road as commercial manager.
