An amateur with Washington Colliery, he got a professional opportunity with Newcastle United in May 1919. After 4 seasons largely spent in the reserves, having made 21 appearances and scored 5 goals, he arrived at Cardiff City. He remained a reserve for most of his 3 seasons with the club, and left for Tranmere Rovers with Herbie Evans. After 12 games and a goal there he returned to his native Northeast where he played local football for many years. Father of post-war Sheffield United and England player Jimmy Hagan. Alfred Hagan died in Sunderland in 1980.
