Youre still not taking on board the point I am making.

Perhaps Zi was written instead of Xi in the same way Zena and Xena may be used interchangeably, with Giuliani not appreciating that in Pinyin Chinese Zi and Xi are not the same, in the way that Xena and Zena are in English.

I do understand what you are saying. Let me put it another way.

If someone who speaks English sees Xi written down, they might pronounce it as 'zee' for the reasons that you have said.

But they wouldn't write it as Zi. Why not?

Because they have already seen it written down!

Its not at all plausible that a man with a career like Guiliani has had would never have seen the name President Xi written- let alone the rest of the name which he also got 'almost correct'.

Yeah, you've got him on that point tbh.

You may be correct, or it may be that Guiliani really does use Z instead of X.

Given the way his surname is pronounced, perhaps he should have written President Gi.

But he didn't because that wasn't the mistake he was making.

There. We finished. Phones down at last.

All this because he wrote Zi instead of Xi.

I'll ask again, why do you think Guiliani is an expert on pinyin?

Are you claiming that an experienced politician like Guiliani has never seen the name written down?

So you accept that he wouldn't know Zi and Xi would be pronounced differently (using Pinyin)

:goalpost:

I don't know and don't care how much pinyin guiliani does and doesn't know.

Our discussion was about you saying that X and Z are interchangeable (which they're not in pinyin or English).

Of course they are in English, that's probably why Guiliani spellt it the way he did. He probably didn't realise that Xi is the pinyin form of the name, rather than an English form.

So we can spell Zylophone and Xebra?

Are you sure?

I said it was used interchangeably, I didn't say that was always the case. I gave an example further up (Xena v Zena).

Just to be clear, you're saying that the words Xena and Zena are both in the English dictionary?

they are names, which is what we are talking about.

whilst you've not got Graham level's of intelligence, you're intelligent enough to understand the point.

You've misunderstood. We use x and z interchangeably in English, as they produce the same phonene at the start of a word.

So perhaps an example of this, instead of some Greek names?
