Mick sold us Bothroyd. Another positive.
In one game at Wolves he had Bothroyd on the bench. In the second half he brought him on and he went on to score. Jay gave big Mick the old sush gesture, so he brought him back off for taking the piss.

I think the 6 month contract is for budget reasons not football. He will be given an extension if he gets us near the top 6. We are in the Warnock cycle again. I just hope we continue down the young and potential signing route.
Spot on

I disagree. I know we don’t have the budget of Man City but I’m sure we could afford Mick McCarthy for a couple of years.

In this current climate no Harris had a season and half to pay off. It makes sense with a 6 month contract.

I think getting Mick in until the end of the season is shrewd bit of business.
The incentive is there for him to succeed; if he does really well, he gets a longer contract, if he doesn’t then we get rid and won’t have to pay up 2 years of contract. It also gives us 6 months to choose a new manager whilst we’re in safe hands.
He’s experienced enough to keep us up, which I don’t think Harris was.

Mick will have a similar effect to Warnock when he came in. He will win a few games and that will be more than enough to satisfy the committee to extend his contract no question. Saves them the bother to bring someone else in.

I mailed an old shipmate, who is a devoted Sunderland fan. I asked him what he thought of Mick Mccarthy. And this was his reply:
Mick was and still is loved by our fans mate. Great manager at spotting young unknown talent and giving them a chance to enhance the first team. He was never given enough funds after he got us to the premiership. Football we played the season we got promoted was great mate. Always rated him. Would have had him back here in a heartbeat. Hope he does well mate. A very honest passionate fella and top man with the fans. Don't think you find and Mackem that would have a bad word for him.

A good write up i thought.

Interesting to find out why people weren't that enamoured with McCarthy being appointed.

I'm wondering if people see McCarthy's age (61) and thus automatically are biased in thinking "must be a dinosaur"; I guess the reverse may be the same with appointing a younger 'Arris - "must be progressive".

Yeah good point, I think I literally just heard what everyone else was saying about him and judged him from that. I didn't know his past record or saw any footage of him other than old post-match interviews etc

I'd rather McCarthy's no nonsense, tell it as he sees it than 'Arris manager speak bs.

Mick on the training pitch. Proper hands on Manager / coach. I like that.

To me it seems he had done nothing for a while but I hadn't realised quite how difficult things were at Ipswich. Good to be reminded of his promotions and also that he is joined by Terry Connor. Upbeat appraisals from fans of his former clubs and the Thatcher and Bothroyd stories have heartened me too. Gone from feeling a bit meh to thinking it might be the most realistic business we could do at the moment.
