It's an interesting and thought provoking article. There is a bit of a chicken and egg situation as flying from Cardiff as it is often uncompetitively expensive. There doesn't seem to be an easy solution for this and apparently it's more complex than simply the landing fee or whatever it's called.A very interesting article here from a former Board Member at Cardiff Airport. Interesting because it is informed, but I don't fully agree with his suggested remedies. If nothing else, it shows that the airport has been heavily subsidising airlines to use the airport - the people who have been accusing Cardiff Airport of charging high landing fees are clearly wrong. However, whilst an airport is a commercial entity, the reason that the WG got involved was because they saw it as a vital piece of infrastructure and important for the South Wales economy. As mentioned in my previous post, I think they have to incentivise airlines, but they have to do it better and be more innovative and selective. Building up other forms of income makes sense, but passengers are its raison d'etre. I think the boutique model he suggests has some merit if it follows the route development criteria I mentioned earlier. Jimmy, I think the connecting flight thing is something you get used to. Most travellers in the US ( except those in big cities ) recognise the need to connect flights. It wouldn't work for all short haul flights, but if say you could fly to Nice via Paris, or if you could fly to Dubrovnik via Frankfurt it would be much easier than schlepping up to Heathrow. In my previous life, I almost always flew via Amsterdam. It's an interesting and thought provoking article. I like the experience and convenience so sometimes pay the premium to fly from Cardiff but that is challenging for some especially for family trips that aren't package based. For a lot of journeys you'd lose significant time too as would need a connecting flight which many people hate doing.

I don't mind them too much personally but a lot of people are intimidated by them. I've seen people look terrified and panicky w[UWSL]hen they have to make a connecting flight even though it's straightforward enough. Interesting read. I’m not going to tell a bloke who runs airports for a living how to run airports, but I absolutely disagree with him on this point -A very interesting article here from a former Board Member at Cardiff Airport. Not good for the environment is it? The trains are pretty good to Paddington tooSo many complaints about the M4 around Newport, that it got me thinking.
When the Severn Tunnels were closed for maintenance work a few years ago, they put on flights to London City Airport from CWL.
It just so happened we had our industry expo at the Excel during that time, so I got a return flight. It was amazing.
No idea why that isn't a regular thing...?
It would alleviate congestion on the M4, would increase footfall at CWL and massively increase connectivity and investment options into South Wales.
It's a no brainer, surely?
The rail service to Paddington is very good. Around 35 trains a day each way, 1hr 50m journey time, and with the Elizabeth line you can be right over in the docklands in 20 mins. Not good for the environment is it? The trains are pretty good to Paddington too
