Off-Topic Cardiff Airport

No ground avoidance rader

To have only two in the world without it would say it's actually very unusual. I was joking above, but must be dangerous (although thankfully there's never been a problem).

Surely it's not beyond the Wurzels to install it given their huge PAX numbers?

Especially as pointed out, fog issues:sherlock:

Although I have to say, I really did like that idea of a Severnside Airport built on reclaimed land in the Bristol Channel near Llanwern.

Would close both Bristol and CWL (to passenger / charter flights at least) and would merge the two in a purpose built, mega hub.

Was it Peter Hain who proposed it, or am I imagining things?

And if that was to go ahead, I'd be ambitious and put a lovely, slinky new bridge straight off my favourite motorway in the whole UK (the M49 - it's like a private motorway) across to it.

Could then be linked up to the M4 bypassing the Brynglas Tunnels and kill several birds (with several stones admittedly).

Just an interest.

Well I think between us, if we could get a Crowdfunder going and a few of the lads (and lady) on here chipped in, we could get the Severnside project up and running and finally have a successful and functional airport serving the needs of South Wales and the South West

I've got a cement mixer and wheelbarrow to start...

Is it a chicken and egg situation though?

The few million more passengers flying from the Slave Traders Carrot Crunching Aerodrome must surely mean they can lower their prices, which in turn attracts more passengers etc etc

I always live to hear from @Costa Coffee Crew on these matters, as he is our bona fide Cardiff Airport expert.

Sorry to highlight you @Costa Coffee Crew !!

But you are, so there

Maybe. I'd prefer to use Cardiff airport if it was viable but it rarely is. I would imagine it's not going to grow much short term with Drakeford being very environmentally focussed.

Anonymouse seemed to know his stuff about aviation too.

The Qatar Airlines news is very welcome, and a bit of a surprise. I doubted whether they would come back. WG must be supporting the Airline in some way.
The whole thing about cost, is often misunderstood. Costs are set by the airlines not by the airport, although landing costs do come into it. But I doubt whether CWL is more costly than Bristol (I don't have recent evidence). It's more to do with the type of airlines which fly out of there and of supply and demand. I flew to Malaga earlier this year and the Cardiff flights with Ryanair were on a par (if not cheaper) than Easyjet out of Bristol.

Granted it's carrier based but if you're going to a non package destination it's normally via KLM and Amsterdam and thus expensive. On a few occasions Cardiff has been hundreds of pounds more so I schlepped to Bristol instead.

The flights to other European cities are patchy at best. Cardiff airport is decent for a week in a sunny resort and getting to Belfast or Edinburgh. Qatar news is welcome but Cardiff isn't a great airport as it stands which is a shame as could serve a big chunk of Wales well.

Again, it's chicken and egg.

You need more passengers, which attract more carriers, which in turn attracts more passengers etc. Improvements to the buildings can then be justified.

Although I love CWL as it is. Not just because it's ours, but the ease of transit to it and through it.

Bristol is an absolute pain on the arse in both counts. It's actually too busy for its footprint.

And as Costa has said above, if you plan in advance and do some homework, some of the prices are on a par with the Wurzels, for a fraction of the stress.

Cairnsy must be standing on a chair in this pic.

From what I can make out there’s just been an emergency landing. A freight flight diverted from Philadelphia on route to Stansted.

Anything unusual reported?

I ask as CWL regularly takes diverted flights from all over the world as we are very lucky to have a 24 hour airport on our doorstep, plus the runway can handle the biggest of planes of all laden weights.
