The irony in that is that it was Enoch Powell who toured the Caribbean, when he was Minister for Health, recruiting nurses and doctors to come to Britain, because the NHS was desperately short of staff.

Did you have to buy a carnet for each piece of equipment required for your job as well? Did you require a special licence to drive that van full of equipment? These already make touring Europe as a small band immediately financially unviable. Then you realise that selling t-shirts & records weren't worth it due to the additional work on paying tax in that country. And the next country, and the next etc...

Even the biggest bands the UK has produced started off slumming it around Europe & the UK. Due to this many many bands that make an OK living have had a revenue stream taken away from them & their work unviable as a career, and many up and coming bands won't get that chance to build up a reputation and make it big.
