Declan John has opened up on the struggles that preceded his exit at Swansea City - and insists he was good enough to be a star at the Liberty Stadium.
John has spent the season on loan at Bolton Wanderers this since January, where he has proved an important part in the club's successful push for promotion from League Two.
The full-back's contract at the Liberty Stadium is up this summer, and he admits he will have to "wait and see" over his next move, with an exit from south Wales more or less a nailed-on certainty.
John has played just 18 times for the Swans since his arrival in 2018, and is not a part of Steve Cooper's first-team plans in Landore.
He found himself training with the club's under-23s before his exit earlier in the season, but has since gone on to make 21 appearances for The Trotters, netting two goals.
It's been quite a turnaround for the Welshman, who admits his exile at the Swans was tough to accept.
Opening up on his struggles, the former Cardiff City and Rangers man insists he was never really given a reason for his omission, and says his progress at Bolton has furthered his belief that he could have made a difference in SA1.
"It was tough," he said when casting his mind back to his Liberty Stadium exit. "There was days where I didn’t want to go into training, I’ll be completely honest with you and not really being given a reason why.
"I think I was more than good enough to play in that team and I think I’ve shown what I can do in the games that I’ve played this season.
"I think especially in this climate now I think it’s been really tough for everyone and for this to happen, especially for me from going playing 23s football for the last six months to getting promoted with this team is brilliant."
Wanderers boss Ian Evatt has already admitted that he'd like to take the 25-year-old on a permanent basis, but John says there hasn't yet been any discussion over his next move.
"The boys have been asking me if I’m going to sign over the last couple of weeks but nothing’s been talked about so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens," he added.
“I think it was just the main thing for me to play games and obviously I knew the gaffer when he was at Chesterfield as well a little bit when I was there so it was just an easy choice to come and I was guaranteed minutes as well which was a good thing.
"I think I’ve done well this season and the boys have been brilliant.
“Obviously the aim when I first spoke to the gaffer was for us to get promotion and we’ve gone and done that. We’ve worked so hard, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
