Did you explain that if the sun was the size of an orange our nearest stellar neighbour would be in Cape Town? When I was with cardiff astronomical society, I did a "walk through the solar system scale".
So I got a load of balls and marbles, etc and each pace you took represented 150million km, or 1 astronomical unit.
I did it at our open day at dyffryn gardens, starting with the sun , based at our observatory, and I paced out all the planets.
I got it off the internet.
The first 3 inner balls or planets were within a step from the sun with Earth, being 150 million km away (1Au) .
Mars like another step away.
The final 4 planets were hundreds of steps away and I left a card by each ball telling em what the planet was and a few facts.
Cant remember exactly.
But the kids and parents loved it.
I used it to alleviate queues at the observatory.
