I'd love to go back. The country is immense and there is so much to see, but it's like stepping back 30 years in terms of sophistication and facilities.
:hehe:Coming from Wales, you don't get many chances to say that. Was mesmerised my uncle was still cooking on a wood burning stove (couldn't fault what they cooked though)

A few years back, Mrs TDA and I were lucky enough to be able to have a retirement / change of lifestyle holiday of a lifetime.

On the evening of my birthday, we found ourselves in the Atherton Highlands above tropical Queensland at this fair establishment

We had a fantastic evening there with the locals and the beer and food was superb. It turned out that the family of the owner has emigrated from a village in South Wales, the name of which his wife had written down but nobody could pronounce. The note got passed around the locals who were completely clueless for a couple more rounds and, as the beer flowed, the pronunciation got worse. Eventually, I wrote it phonetically for them ....

Nostalgia made me Google the place again just now. Sad to find this .....

GONE - Burnt to the ground - Roundyard is NO more :-(
Passed back through Tarzali on the weekend and intended to stop in for a meal. Unfortunately there is only a concrete slab where once stood a fine little establishment. Signs of a fire was the only other remnant of a once cool little restaurant.

Date of visit: June 2013

The mispronunciation that irks me is the way people say their Welsh ‘y’ as an e. As in Pennny bont or Penny lan rather than Pen uh bont or Pen uh lan.

Prior to last year, hadn't been back there since 92. Place has changed enormously. Different faces, but still has that healthy vibe about it. Can see myself moving back there at some point

Some Welsh "Llan" place names lend themselves more readily to a single "anglicised" L pronunciation - Llandough, Llantwit, Llandaff spring to mind. Others like Llanelli, Llangrannog, Llandrindod work better with the "Ll". I think the rule of thumb is the nearer to Cardiff, the less the influence of the original Welsh.
