18th August 1906 – BETTING ON DOCK VIEW ROAD

Robert Yarr, a young man of Barry, was arrested for loitering on Dock View Road for the purpose of betting. Between 12.30pm and 1.15pm in the afternoon, no fewer than thirty men were seen handing him slips of paper along with money. Yarr promptly dispatched these wagers to a Cardiff bookmaker by express post. His enterprise ended badly – he was fined 40 shillings plus costs.

Our street.

Are those buildings still there?

Unfortunately not. The tall building on the left was the Chain Locker (Hotel/Pub servicing Sailors and Prostitutes alike), demolished in the 70s/80s for a Care home. The one shop on the corner is still there but shops and houses on the left are now shitty flats. Our house was built in 1910 for executive workers whilst building the docks.

Thank you; I had no idea that it was being demolished. I see from Wales Online that it will be replaced by student accommodation:

Wasn’t that what also happened to Glossop Terrace maternity hospital, just across the street?
