The CWS biscuit factory in Splott, before Beresford Road bridge was built to remove the level crossing on the main line, in the early 1900's. The Taff Vale Roath Branch ran behind down to the Docks. A small alcove on the bridge was a popular spot in steam days to watch the busy main line , not so much now. The factory , a fine yellow brick Victorian building, was eventually demolished for house building.

Originally called Plucca Lane (or Heol y Plwca), it was a rural path through wet, uncultivated land where rushes were gathered, marking the edge of the parish of Roath.
As urban development intensified between 1860 and 1897, it became known as Castle Road, named after the nearby Roath Castle (or Mansion).
In 1905, it was renamed City Road to honour Cardiff becoming a city.

Westgate street and the entrance to Glamorgan cricket club,at Cardiff Arms Park,in c1964 and the same view in 2023. Glamorgan cricket club moved from here in 1966 with the ground demolished, which made way for Cardiff Rugby club opened in 1969.The cricket club moved to Sophia Gardens.
