Julius Caesar Ibbetson’s 1808 painting of the medieval ruins of Castell Coch, based on his 1792 watercolour.
Enhanced and colourised images of the reconstruction of the castle in 1875. The older images, Starting in 1875, the Kitchen Tower, Hall Block and shell wall were rebuilt first, followed by the Well Tower and the Gatehouse, and the Keep Tower last.
The bulk of the external work was complete by the end of 1879.

A general view of the docks late 1980’s

One of the few courses in the area I’ve never played.
One of only two in the area I've played (the other being `Wenvoe) - had a round at Radyr over fifty years ago, I was useless (as usual), but I did come the closest I've ever been to a hole in one on a "proper" course on one of the par threes there.

Dinky Poo and Radyr are the only two I haven’t played.

Wenvoe was the first course, other than my own, that I played. Junior open many years ago. Still a fun track, but a fairly brutal closing few holes apart from the last.

Great stuff Trav. Do you know much about the structure that was there before they built Castell Coch on top of it?

It's a lot older than I thought and I was surprised that was already called Castell Coch before the rebuild.

The original castle at Castell Coch is thought to have been constructed in the late 11th century. It was built to defend Cardiff and control the land around the river Taff.

English nobleman, Gilbert de Clare, built a new castle between 1267 and 1277 to protect his land.

This castle was probably destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314.

The site was acquired in 1766 by John Stuart, the 4th Earl of Bute and later the 1st Marquess of Bute, when he married Lady Charlotte Windsor.
