The Castle, viewed from the junction of Westgate st in c.1878 and notice no Angel Hotel on the corner where the wall is, that wasn’t built until 1883 and was further up on the then Angel st, opposite The Castle Gates

The Lady Windsor Lock was constructed to make Barry Dock unique from the other docks in the Bristol Channel. It was the only Dock that could accommodate ships at any state of the tide. Cardiff Dock was high and dry for three hours either side of the tide , that’s partly why Cardiff Dock became so congested with loaded ships waiting for the tide; this was not the case for Barry Dock after the Lady Windsor Lock was completed. It was one of the reasons why Barry Dock surpassed Cardiff as the greatest coal exporter in the world.

I had no idea they exported more coal from Barry than Cardiff.

Does Barry have canals leading to it too?

Probably brought into Barry Docks via rail.
Barry surpassing Cardiff is a new one on me too....never heard that before.
Trains gave Barry the opportunity to steam ahead [pun intended]. David Davies built trains directly from coalfields to Barry Dock [which I think he owned or effectively ran]. There's a big abandoned tunnel in Wenvoe that was part of the route.

Is that the tunnel near Culverhouse X that the Royal Train used for overnight cover/shelter during a wartime visit?

It's very near Culverhouse Cross. It's near the M&S car park. Didn't know about that visit but it would make a lot of sense. I think it was used to store valuable commodities durinf the war too. Tunnel a mile or so long and wouldn't be that obvious from the air

This confirms it. I've done the walk myself - vent is pretty impressive but otherwise its a dirty tunnel :hehe:

So, we had orange buses back then - wonder when they changed?

Starting with the new fleet intake of 1974 the orange livery gradually replaced the old colour scheme.

We went Orange about 70-74 because it happened when I was living in Canton

Claret and Yellow !!!!!

The livery of the old Cardiff Buses was Crimson Lake and Cream
I don't get back to Cardiff much these days, but I see from photos that some buses are now orange and a touquoisie blue.

Two things following on from the comments above .......

I seem to remember initially the maroon and cream buses being repainted in orange, i.e. before the were replaced.

The other thing is that I have a clear memory of seeing some existing buses repainted in the same blue colour that is used today, so that for a while we had both orange buses and blue buses.

I can't find any photgraphic evidence of this though .........
