The band was touched by tragedy, three of them, Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in a plane crash, guitarist Allen Collins' wife died in childbirth, his second mrs was killed in a car crash which left Collins paralysed and unable to play the guitar again, he eventually died from pneumonia linked to the paralysis.
