I can’t believe the Welsh language is so offensive to some people’s ears on here they can’t bear to hear it. You live in Wales but are too fucking tight to fork out for Sky so watch a Welsh broadcast but are iffy about it being in Welsh. Lol. Only in a country that’s ruled by another one would you get such apathy towards your own heritage.

I would love to learn it. It wasn't taught when I was in school because Thatcher didn't think it was important. I love hearing it though, and with a soft female voice it is musical.

I do sort of get it. If I’m watching a foreign stream the commentary can be annoying but I just think it’s sad and a shame. It’s obviously hard to just learn as well as an adult so the fact there’s more schools teaching it these days is the ray of light.

I'm just glad the option is there to watch it on terrestrial tv:shrug2:

Coming from a generation that only had 3 part time channels for a big part of my life, maybe I'm too old for all this channel snobbery.

The only thing I don't like is Americans commentating on "Soccer" and using American sports terms. And Clive Tyldesley. Ally McCoist is fast becoming a trigger to my uncontrollable rage too.

True enough. I remember the Welsh News on HTV - 6-615 in English then 615-630 the same stories in Welsh.

When I was at school in Cardiff, it was obligatory to take at least one language other than English at GCE O level. Our options were Latin, French, Spanish and Welsh and you could juggle one or two of them to fit with other chosen subjects.

I took Welsh and French and my WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee) certificate shows that I passed both and it records Welsh as being my "foreign language".

There’s always the option to learn Welsh sailor boy
I've been learning it using the Duolingo app since the shitstorm started and I'm not too bad at answering the online questions but listening to commentary is akin to a machine gun firing phlegm bullets.

I think that night they got the schedule mixed up.

I did the same but the Wales highlights were on after the England top 10 thing, not before as listed.

Definitely wasn't compulsory back in the late 60's. Plenty took a French and Spanish combination, but Welsh was a good way of dropping RE.

RE or Scripture as we used to call it was also compulsory

I remember failing a Scripture exam badly because apparently Mary arrived in Bethlehem on a donkey, not in the back of Joseph's Cortina. This answer also got me and my mate in trouble, as he copied my answer.

We had the choice to drop RE, Music and individual Sciences at 14. I kept on Biology, but got rid of Physics and Chemistry, which were always a mystery to me.

Our only compulsory subjects were English Language and Literature, Maths and one foreign language. Everything else was optional.

I chose Physics for my science, that was a waste of a couple of hours a week. Just sat there looking around, thinking wtf

Blimey Joe, I don't hate the Welsh language, I just want to be able to listen to commentary in a language I understand.

In our school days we were taught Welsh in one very flimsy, half-arsed lesson a week in which you'd come away having learned bugger all and growing up all our TV antennas were all turned to bloody South West England stations, we wouldn't even get Welsh news so our exposure to the Welsh language has been incredibly limited.

I've tried learning Welsh in my latter years too but discovered you might as well be trying to teach it to a bowl of wet cornflakes, such is my brains' ability to take in new information.

I wasn't really thinking about you mate. Sorry if it came across that way. You're a massive advocate of Wales and the Welsh language.
