Approved at the annual general meeting in Cardiff on 28 February, the trial will begin when the Canadian Premier League kicks off in April.

Wenger, who has been Fifa's head of global football development since 2019, proposes that there should be a complete gap between the attacker and the second-to-last opposition player - effectively the last defender, given the goalkeeper's usual positioning.

Critics have suggested that daylight offside will give too much advantage to the attacking team.

More pissing about with the rules for no good reason. They’re just changing the argument from is the attacker in front to is the attacker fully ahead. If anything I think it will make the linesman’s job more difficult.

This.

Absolute horseshit.

It’ll be a free for all in the lower leagues and they’ll spend even longer analysing every goal in the greedy league.

Let’s be honest, it’s not really an issue. The real issue is with the premier league and their shit use of var. Try sorting out that mess before you worry about the rest.

This will still cause confusion because the question of “is his toe offside?” just gets rearranged to “is his toe onside?”

There’s no point fucking around with the rules anymore, the neutral game is hard enough to watch nowadays as it is. If they really want to get fans back on board then they need a big reset. Allow human error back into the game but start punishing the officials who do it time and time again.

I’ve said for a while now, referees giving post match interviews and admitting when they got stuff wrong would do them huge favours in ensuring they don’t garner a reputation for being shit. Equally they should be applauded for getting tight decisions bang on. There’s no issue with the rules, it’s how they’re enforced.

We're still going to get all the VAR analysis bollocks. The line is just in a slightly different place.

Good idea more goals will be scored that’s what we all watch the games for

Get the points you're making and you may well be right about it just shifting emphasis but I think this might be an improvement.

I don't like how all sports seem obsessed with frequent rule changes these days though

Fully ahead gives balance of doubt to attackers; more goals, more interest in games.

There have been so many ridiculous calls - does an arm ahead give an advantage? - I'm in favour of this change.

If it's intended to give the advantage to the striker then it should do that. If it's intended to give more clarity I don't believe it will.

Have you thought this through? It gives attackers a slight advantage in as much as they can be around half a yard further forward but I can’t see how it would give ‘balance of doubt’ any more than the current rule. Instead of a player not being in front, they now cannot be clear in front. There is still a line to judge in exactly the same way as it was before.

The balance of doubt was in favour of defenders before - attacker has to be at most level. Now, there has to be clear daylight between defender and attacker - attacker has to be wholly beyond the defender. At present, if it appears a fingernail is past defender, offside. Under this, if that fingernail is level with defender, onside. It favours attackers.

That’s not balance of doubt though is it. The decision still has to be made in exactly the same way it currently is. When they draw that line to see if there’s a gap they’ll still be arguing about toenails and elbows.

With the end result being goals currently disallowed now being allowed, changing the dynamics of games.

The decision making process will be exactly the same except the striker will need to be completely in front to be offside. Yes, it favours the attacker. No, there is no more balance of doubt than there is currently. We'll have the exactly the same arguments going on about the striker's position. If you wanted to say it will give the striker an advantage why not say so instead of whatever you mean by balance of doubt. Assuming you know what you mean.

You effectively admit here that we'll have the same arguments over fingernails, etc.

Under Wenger's offside rule, any player without fingernails will have a clear advantage.
