Erol Bulut says Ollie Tanner needed taking out of the Cardiff City squad because he wanted to ensure the dressing room was populated with the right characters.

Tanner was an unexpected star in the early portion of the season. Many expected him to be sent out on loan but after enjoying a stellar pre-season, manager Bulut wanted to include him in his squad for the Championship season.

Tanner would repay the boss's faith by scoring the opening goal in the South Wales derby against Swansea before winning the penalty, which Aaron Ramsey slotted to make it 2-0.

Since then, the winger's form has gradually declined and he has found himself on the periphery. Indeed, last week he was omitted from the squad and he played for the under-21s this week.

And Bulut said he needed to hold talks with the 21-year-old over his demeanour during training and within the dressing room, but admitted the player is making strides and could be back in contention soon.

"I have spoken with him many times. The last two weeks he is doing better in the training sessions. If he continues to train like that, mentally and physically, he will be with us," Bulut said of Tanner.

"I will remind you of one Premier League coach, Ange Postecoglou, saying about having the wrong person in the dressing room can destroy a lot of things. This, we don't want. This, we try and manage here in our team. We want the correct characters and players in the dressing room. Everyone must help each other.

"Young players can have one or two great games and afterwards, they are flying a little bit. So, to bring them back, it takes time. Ollie had a bit of something like that, I spoke with him many times and the last two weeks he is doing well. Whether it's Ollie Tanner, someone else, it doesn't matter, I want the best performance and they have to give the best performance.

"If the body language in the training or dressing room is wrong then we have to separate him."

Tanner's stock rose incredibly sharply after his derby heroics. Going from non-league to the talk of Cardiff in a matter of months, particularly at such a young age, must be a unique experience.

And Bulut recognises this, insisting the player gets the help required in order to reincorporate him into the squad for the final few games of the campaign.

"He is 20 years old," he added. "He has just scored a goal against Swansea, everyone looks at him differently on the streets than they did before, when maybe nobody recognised him. Now, they know it's Ollie Tanner! He is the hero!

"It is not easy for a 20-year-old player who has never had this before. He has gone from zero to 100 in one day. For him to manage all of this is not easy. We try to help him, our coaches at the training centre try to help him. I've talked with him a lot and now I think he understands he has to start again from where he started before, not where he finished.

"To win something, to get something is difficult. It's more difficult to stay on this level. It goes quickly. Now, he realises better and now he can handle it better.

"Other players, it might happen with (Cian) Ashford, (Joel) Colwill, Rubes (Rubin Colwill). Sometimes experienced players, it can happen. That's why we are here. We are not only coaches, we coach them mentally to come down."

I was wondering why he wasn't in the squad. Fair enough. Not sure about doing it publicly but you have to trust the manager to know what will work best on the players.

First it was the Board's fault, then the fans'. Now he's blaming Oli fucking Tanner. :hehe:

Agree, definitely correct to remove him from the squad if true and it is his job as manager to bring him back into line.
I don’t see how calling him out in public is going to have a positive effect on Tanner though.
How much power over the dressing room does a 20 year old have anyway, when you have a superstar like Rambo as well as other senior players in there?

Another example of Erol being too honest for his own good, really.

Zero upside in mentioning this publicly, even as constructively as he's framed it.

Put itching powder in Kion's Gucci shirt I heard.

Unless he's been a super arrogant c*nt. If it's just poor body language it's OTT

Tanner was giving it the big I am, smacking drinks out of people's hands, pissing on legs in the showers and laughing, pushed a moussaka through the grate in Goutas's locker door, guffed and wafted it towards Jamilu and kept saying loudly "anyone got sausage ralls?" every time Ralls walked in the dressing room.

Bulut has no option :hehe:

Even if he has, Bulut's got everything available to him to deal with it in-house.

Where's the benefit in letting the rest of us speculate about it?

I'm sceptical of what Bulut has done but he may think that Tanner and others need taking down a peg or too. Can't make my mind up if it's the sign of the manager thinking for the long term or one who thinks he's heading out the door and does nae give a fuck

I’m a little surprised about this, I had the impression that Tanner was a bright lad with his feet on the ground, keen to learn and develop. You would like to think that EB knows his players better than us and has judged this one right. Time will tell.

I want this to be true

It's certainly a style of management we are not used to in this country, but who is to say that it is not a valid strategy? Let's see how Tanner reacts.

I did say when we signed Bulut, one thing he insists on is player discipline, step out of line & you face his wrath, whether it should be done publicly is debatable, but in his defence, this is how turkish managers tend to operate, heart on sleeve types, and no holds barred, not a trait we see a lot in uk imho. Yes we have passionate managers, but they have media savvy people, who know what tends to be " acceptable " to do/say here.
