Do shinpads even help anyway? Unless they are 360 around the lower leg, can easily rip a calf to pieces from behind with studs/blades. The pace of the modern game, even the old style ones seem too flimsy. They don't help on scissor tackles either.

Can see why some players go as small as possible.

Do car seatbelts work against the car being crushed by a boulder?

Doubt they make that much difference anymore bar protecting from the odd bit of bruising and cutting. There should be proper regulation of them or just make them entirely optional. Some of them look smaller than fag packets now

People will always go for the legally smallest possible size.

Does make you wonder if refs are enforcing any sizing rules these days.

I assume there aren't any other than a requirement to wear some shin protection. Sometimes the areas covered seem counterintuitive. Either get players to do it properly or not at all

Exactly.

You hear about diff types of material in shirts etc to get benefits, never hear anything about shinpad technology. They aren't going to prevent cartilage, ligament, tendon damage so just an item to try to protect against cuts to the shin? If someone is going in with enough force, a shinpad won't stop the shin being snapped unless it's made of titanium.

So I guess players are happy to take the risk of getting a cut like Holtby did.

With the studs up tackle effectively banned the risk may be down significantly. The only reason I can think for keeping the law at the top of the game is to make sure players protect themselves at the lower level where the risk of bad tackles is higher

What we need is to get rid of those shinpads and lightweight boots.

Raid every castle and museum, make them play in Knight's boots - covers the shin and calf fully, no metatarsal issues.
