Fish Fingers v Fishcakes

It’s got to be the latter for me. Don’t get me wrong I loves a fish finger sandwich as much as the next man, but your fish cake is just more substantial. It’s got more heft.

Depends though, homemade are great, those greasy orange discs that live in the hot box at chippies are fucking grim.

I've started making fishcakes in the same fashion as corned beef hash, i.e. the mixture oven cooked in a dish and then divided into portions. So much easier.

As this is the football off season and generally quiet, I will expand this thread to invite comment on other frozen fish offerings.

These are pretty damned nice. It seems that colin is pollack, not hake (not that there is much difference) ....... Cabillaud (cod), Merlu (hake), Eglefin (haddock). All part of the same family of white fish and interchangeable, unlike whatever it is called that is bred in Chinese sewers.

Love fish cakes me.

Not so keen on fish fingers, but then again I’m not eight.

That 2018 price adjusted for 8 fish fingers is £2.20, almost double that price 8 years later.

I hope he's buying more than beard wax.
We e had loads of food inflation even on cheap and nasty producrs
Captain Birdseye is Captain Findus in France, same product range, but he has a different identity in a number of countries. All owned by the same parent company.

Our local supermarket has just stopped stocking Findus in favour of a dubious looking cheaper alternative.

Cod products tend to be rarer here, more likely to be Colin or Merlu, both of which are Hake.

When we can find them, these are the boys!

Pollock is a lovely fish and pretty similar to cod but doesn't have the creamy flavour the latter does when it's fresh.

I suspect a lot of chippies have been using Pollock for a while

Fishcakes can be placed neatly into those pack-of 12 buns from Tesco that perfectly align (as they're both small, so you can have 6 in a single sitting)

And they allow for weird toppings, should you wish. Unlike fingers who can only be accompanied by ketchup or mayo.

I live in the land of the baguette, far more practical for fish fingers than fish cakes.
