It's "really unfair" English breweries can sell in Wales but aren't paying business rates, owners say.

Phillip runs the Bragdy Tŵt Lol Brewery in Trefforest and I know him quite well. He's passionate about brewing. He's been running the brewery alone for many years but this is the first year he was able to pay himself more than the minimum wage. That is shocking. When I was talking to him a few months ago he told me how much better off he would be if he moved to England but that's not something as a passionate Welsh-speaking Welshman he would consider.
In Hay, our local brewery, Lucky 7, has in fact moved to just over the English border and Luke, who runs it, is now much better off. He shouldn't have needed to do it though. Welsh government is very business-unfriendly. It needs to do much more to support small businesses like Phillip and Luke, starting with changes to business rates. Even the god-awful Starmer government is recognising the need. Not the Labour-run Senedd though.
