Since 2001 I have needed to go to A and E at UHW a fair number of times

Mainly with my late wife But a couple of times more recently (in 2018 and 2019) for myself and her.

I can't remember my last visit in August 2022 becuase I was blue lighted in after sufferring a cardiac arrest at home Thankfully my son is trained in CPR bevuase he had to do it for around 15 minutes until the Air Ambulance ground patrol got my heart going again (took three goes with the defibrillator mind!) i didn't wake up until October though.

Yesterday though, muggins here went to get my shopping delivery from the courier and somehow came a cropper falling on the wheelchair ramp ouside my house banging my head, left hand and both knees.

As it turned out , I had done no seriouis damage (except to my pride!) A CAT scan of my head (I am on blood thinners and a bad blow on the head can result in a serious internal bleed) and an X Ray of my hand showed nothing more severe than bruising

Today I feel shaken (but not stirred!) but I thought there was an impoprtant point to make for all those of you who have elderly relatives orfriends or indeed who are elderly yourselves.

It is that older people are vulnerable and that such little incidents can be life changing or indeed life threatening. I could have had internal bleeding or fractured a hip necessitating a hospital stay and that can be really bad for you.

My wife went in last year but sadly picked up two hospital aquired infections adn passed away on 21 September

There but for the grace of god go for when I was in the year before that I caught several infections when I was in a coma, my kidneys packed up for a while and I was very lucky.

That is why I am so concerned about the winter fuel payment shambles. Not for myself, the money certainly helps but i can get by without it. But there are many por so and so's who can't and who are just above the pension credit cut off. They could end up in hospital and the results could be fatal.

I don't want anyone else to go through what me and my family have unnecessarily.

Sorry.I have waffled on for a bit, but it is a subject I feel strongly about.

Damn, sorry to hear that mate and glad to hear you're ok-ish now.

What exactly is going on with the winter fuel payments?

To get them you need to be over 66 and receive one of the following:
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support

Do you know why it's a shambles though?

Do you know why it's a shambles though?

It's where the lines are drawn, those that can afford it will not be affected, those that really need it will get it. There'll be edge cases in the middle where some people will be worse off.

It has the potential to be a genuine Labour farce, unlike that two tier nonsense.

It doesn’t need to be though.

Unfortunately with all things like this there’ll be the people who just miss the cut off so surely there could be a half payment for these people?

Ultimately giving everyone the money regardless of income is ridiculous but there should be a better system in place to help those that need it.

Good post.

As you say there should be a better system in place so that those just above still get something.

Glad to hear you’re doing ok.

Bloody hell, sorry to hear that mate but glad you are doing ok, bet you are sick of the sight of hospitals

The problem was it's long been a bribe to pensioners because they go out and vote. Many pensioners are better off than working people because they have very generous pensions (denied now to working generations), no mortgage and often plenty of equity / assets. Also they're getting generous increases because of triple lock when working people were getting below inflation pay rises.

WFP should always have been a benefit (I appreciate there is some stigma around this for older generations) as was plain daft it was paid to millionaires and expats living in Spain. Demographically it was becoming more of a burden too.

There needs to be a cut off somewhere but the amount chosen is too low.

I think he did it deliberately just to go back and meet you….

The next one coming down the line is pensioners will be getting taxed on their state pension Tony. personal allowances are frozen until 2028 and with the triple lock on the pensions we are possibly 18 months away from the yearly state pension exceeding that limit therefore making the state pension taxable. imagine 80 years old back doing self assessments.

What happens with occupational pensions? Automatically deducted?

I would have thought so make no mistake they will have a system in place so that no one slips through the net regardless of who is in power.

The original state pension was intended to provide about half of the national average wage for retirees. That has been devalued exponentially over a long period of time, even though contributions towards it have increased.

What we have seen in recent years is lip service being paid towards restitution.

@Jimmytaff - sorry to burst your bubble, but retirees living overseas do not get the winter fuel payment as it is deemed that we live in a warmer climate, which is absolute bollocks as much of continental europe is colder in the winter than the UK.

So what you are saying is pensioners now have it better than working people now will? :sherlock:
