Cardiff City have signed goalkeeper Alex Runarsson on loan from Arsenal.

The Iceland international was signed by the Gunners in September 2020, but has made only one first-team Premier League appearance for the north Londoners since then, against Wolves in February 2021.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Turkish Super Lig club Alanyaspor, Erol Bulut's former side, of course, and one suspects the Bluebirds boss will have sought recommendations from his former employers before signing him.

“I’m very happy to get the deal over the line. It took some time, but I’m pleased to be here," Runarsson said. "The club made contact with my agent and said that they wanted to sign me, I know it’s a big club and it sparked my interest right away.

“I spoke to Gunnars [Aron Gunnarsson] before signing and the first thing he said was ‘go’ and that he loved it here. The manager also spoke to me about the playing style, what he wants from me, what he wants from the team and how he sees my role within the team. He saw me play in Turkey when I was on loan there, so it’s good that I’m coming to play for a manager that knows me and knows my qualities.

“I’m really excited to play in front of the fans. Seeing the stadium, I can feel the atmosphere in the air, so I’m looking forward playing in front of fans. When I signed for Arsenal, it was during Covid, so I didn’t get to experience British football with the fans, so I’m excited to play in that atmosphere.”

Hey Gunnar, looking for some advice here, should I go to Cardiff? What's the set up like?

GO!

Ha ha, yeah, but you were there for a long time, what's the place like, decent staff, fans and stuff? Where's a good area to rent a place?

GO!

Umm, ok Gunnar but seriously, this is a big move for me, you can really help me out with the advice I need to...

GO!

Are you ok mate?

Tbf to him he was hung out to dry after that Man City game for Arsenal, but looks to have got on with it elsewhere.

Watched the highlights back and tbf he was playing at a new team at a much higher level against world class crosses and free kicks.

The free kick he dropped he was unsighted for which was why it made it looked so weird, he couldn't quite react normally to it.

Reminds me of what happened to Karius, but look, Eddie Howe trusted him at Newcastle in some big games so maybe Runnarrson needs a good manager backing him and another chance in British football.

Bizarre looking ayatollah

Maybe not entirely from that video, but others, there is something unorthodox about him.

Perhaps he has very aggressive positioning which almost makes him look too far out at times and there is something about his saving technique and approach that looks unusual, but if it works who cares?

I'd imagine his first game for us the first thing the opposition will do is surround him from crosses and try to put a lot of pressure on to see if he can cope with the physicality.

Don't know what his distribution is like, hope that it is good.

Will he be here as Number 2? Surely not. Will have to be better than Alnwick and Allsop to justify a loan slot in my opinion.

In fairness, if Allsop is leaving or injured for any amount of time, there is no way Luthra is up to Championship level so needed a new GK anyway. Hopefully an upgrade though.

The doubts I have is that it is another keeper who isn't that big. I prefer 6"4 + keepers, especially in the Championship. A Begovic type who is big and imposing on set piece defending.

looks decent enough to me
He does in that vid. I'm just going on what arsenal fans think of him. Most of them say sometimes he makes horrendous howlers.
But new club, let's back him until said howler lol.

They said the same about Enkelman. He was competent until it really mattered :hehe:
