There's a lot of things wrong with college sport. need to be 3 years or so since leaving high school before you can play in NFL; argument has been that forces kids to have to play college football, but equally the other argument is it gives bodies time to develop in a contact sport.
The downside to things opening up is there are now a lot more transfers between colleges than there ever were, bigger programmes able to splash the cash on players.

Didn't know that about NFL - can see some logic in the rationale tbf given the way their sport seems to be structured. In the NBA you don't have to have played in college or do the full 3/4 years but you have to be exceptionally talented if not using college as a pathway to the draft
