I wonder if it's something as simple as that he was able to use his athleticism to get out of all situations at younger levels when playing about kids and now all of a sudden has had to learn won't work anymore when he's no longer an outlier physically.
Reminds me of playing football as a kid - we had a lad up front who must've been about 6'0" at 12 so all we ever did was loft crosses in and he'd score loads a season. When it came time for everyone else to grow up as well he all of a sudden fell off a cliff because he'd never had to learn to play with his feet and all of a sudden his massive physical advantage at headers was gone
