So what you are saying is pensioners now have it better than working people now will? :sherlock:
No, I was clarifying the original objective of the state pension system, nothing to do with the here and now nor the political decisions leading up the present day situation:hehe:

Another five and a bit years to go for me.

Tbf, without a private pension as well, that ain’t much

No, though I believe if you don’t have a private pension, you’d be eligible for pension credit and therefore keep the winter fuel payments

Cardies still 8 quid in Primarni

The original state pension was intended to provide about half of the national average wage for retirees. That has been devalued exponentially over a long period of time, even though contributions towards it have increased.

What we have seen in recent years is lip service being paid towards restitution.

@Jimmytaff - sorry to burst your bubble, but retirees living overseas do not get the winter fuel payment as it is deemed that we live in a warmer climate, which is absolute bollocks as much of continental europe is colder in the winter than the UK.

It is still about half of the average wage though isn't it? Close to £12k next year and the average wage still hovers around £25k I believe.

Contributions increased significantly for working people who are to be denied the more favourable terms current pensioners have enjoyed. My generation will pay significantly more to get significantly less than recently retired ones. Generations coming after me get a worse deal again.

Probably needed to change because of demographics but there has been very little intergenerational equality with successive governments scared to get wealthy pensioners to share the pain as it's not politically expedient and was easier to push it down the road.

As you're an expat I'll take you word on WFP bu[UWSL]t it's been reported plenty of times how those living in Spain were receiving it. They may have a dual residency or some other swizz or it might be shitty reporting. Burst my bubble though? Give over lad [/UWSL]

The state pension has always been for paid for by the contributions of those working. It's money in, money out, no invested fund to draw on, so with people living longer and a smaller proportion of the population working / contributing, the amount having to be paid is bound to increase.

My generation whilst working paid the pensions for those already retired, in exactly the same way that generation had paid for the previous generation's retirement.

That's the price of living in a welfare state. These days too many people taking out and not enough contributing.

You can only have residence in one country. Plenty of people live abroad and retain UK residence, by, in theory, spending more than half the year in the UK. It's far more difficult to abuse that since the UK left the EU as Brit non-residents visiting or living in Europe are limited to 90 days in 180.

As soon as residence abroad is taken, as we did in 2016, the WFP is lost.
