A bumper 13000 plus crowd saw Third Division Cardiff City hold First Division QPR 0-0 at Ninian Park in the Third Round of the FA Cup. That provided a nice boost for skint Cardiff's coffers. However, the joy soon turned to horror as thieves broke into Ninian Park on the night of the game, and stole the £50,000 gate money. The money was later retrieved.

The thief's name was Tony Clements, the Cardiff owner was Tony Clemo.

If you ever look at an aerial view of Ninian Park, there is something odd. The Canton Stand is not in line with the pitch. This is because the pitch was moved closer to Sloper Road following the extension of the Bob Bank terrace. This may have happened (not sure on this one) following the rebuilding of the grandstand after it was destroyed during a botched robbery (again, thieves looking for the gate money from a big cup tie) .

That was not the first time thieves attempted to steal gate money from Ninian Park after a big cup tie. It previously happened in the 30s. The thieves got away with nothing, but burnt the grandstand down when escaping.

The directors had a novel way of estimating the crowds at Ninian Park during the club's heydays.

"If you can see their chests, there's 20,000. If you can see only heads, it's 45,000. If they're on the floodlights it is 55,000".

The Bob Bank roof was once the largest advertising hoarding in the entire UK, something that a Canadian company, House of Segram. In 1960 they leased the roof for £300 a year. The lease lasted 3 years, but the advert lasted 41 years. From 1960-2001. "Captain Morgan Rum. The right rum for today's taste".

Originally, the paint was black letters on a white background but, because of the paint's reaction with the asbestos roof, the colours reversed.

Brace's Bread sponsored the roof from 2001.

I've never been able to find out if this is true or not (I suspect not), but someone once told me that the distance from the back of the Bob Bank (before the roof was built) to the front of the Bob Bank was the biggest in the League (i.e. the Bob Bank was the deepest stand).

I always suspected places like The Valley may have been bigger. Has anyone heard this before?

I never realised that the current championship trophy was the same one as the old first division trophy.

Good fact that

It's always a good trivia question. "Who replaced Leeds as Football League Champions in 1993" Most people say "Manchester United", but the answer is Newcastle United.

Cardiff City were once relegated from Division one, despite conceding less goals than every other team.

John Charles scored from 75 yards on his debut for Cardiff City.

All I remember was Paul Parker playing for QPR. And, being convinced that we were on our way to Wembley. I cried when we lost the replay. :hehe:
my brother supported QPR at the time so our old man took us both down. i loved it then started going 91/92 with my mate.:bluebird:

Phil Dwyer was knocked unconscious at a game at Gillingham in 1975. Some radio stations gave the sad news that Dwyer had died. However, Dwyer's life was saved by the physio Ron Durham who used mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Dwyer, in true style, was back in action the following Saturday.

Jimmy Scoular was so desperate to get a game played that he wasn't going to let a little thing like the pitch being frozen get in the way. He instructed Frank Parsons to pick up a flame thrower from Cowbridge. Thirty minutes after returning, the game was called off because the goal nets had caught fire.
