But why would an American private investigator be dressed as a nineteenth century Chinese peasant? That is not about 'Colour blind' casting.

If the Shaft story is not dependent on the lead character being black, then despite the Richard Rowntree and Samuel Jackson back catalogue I can't see why a new sequel or remake can't have a white or Chinese actor in the role. Sod it, cast Joan Chen as Jane Shaft the private dick! If the story is good enough it will work.

It seems that the 'identity politics' hang ups are coming from your side of the argument, not mine!
