Off-Topic Making your own booze

As he should...

Unless a bender.
He definitely should...if he's game and with Woodys unlikely consent I'll drive Stanty up there in the morning and he can neck all of them and we can post a video on here.

Back in the 80’s/90’s there were shops everywhere selling wine and beer making stuff
Back in them days you had shops selling proper Wham Bars and Eye Ball Gobstoppers as well until Starmer banned them the cunt.

There was one on Cowbridge Road East out towards Victoria Park in recent years. I bought some stuff there a few years ago and was going to visit it again to stock up when I restarted winemaking this summer but it's gone now.

Made a full barrel once in the early 90s.

Stored it in the airing cupboard next to the water boiler with the red jacket on.

We mostly followed the instructions, and left it for 6 weeks.

Was supposed to be a top level Euro lager.

Tried the first pint on my old man, and he had a slurp.

Excitedly we waited for his expert opinion.

After a silence which seemed to last an eternity, he came back with 'that's a blydi good bitter that' and proceeded to glug the rest.

Disappointed, we backed out of the room to work out what to do next.

I now have three demijohns full of cloudy apple juice, foam and sediment.

It might look manky but this is just after I'd stirred the campden tablets in, which stop bacteria growing. It will clear up a bit over the next 24 hours, actually they already look better now: these pics were taken at lunchtime.

I saved a few dozen apples for eating so what you see above is the rest of the two boxes full. Using the juicer was properly laborious. About 10 apples made maybe half a litre of apple juice. The juicing bit takes seconds, but it then produces loads of pulp, which needs emptying out of the machine before you can do the next lot. So half a litre ends up taking 10 minutes or so by the time you've fannied about emptying the apple pulp into a bowl and then periodically taking the bowl and emptying it into the compost etc etc.

Using an apple press would probably have been easier, but what the fuck am I going to do with an apple press for the other 51 weeks of the year? At least the juicer will get used for all manner of healthy natural juices or sit in the utility room cupboard with the potential to.

Next step will be putting the yeast in.

I actually used ChatGPT a lot for advice with all this and it was much more useful than trying to google and watching Youtube vids and that.
I’ve only just read this thread and fair play to you for making your own - I may have missed it but what variety of apple you got?

Yeah that bollox isn’t it. You do want a bitter apple for cider, dabinet and the like otherwise you are going to end up with sweet juice. But carabiner apple? I have known people with them trees make jelly though

Sorry, I just pumped that in for a laugh.

I've got no idea.

No doubt @Woody will be along shortly to correct the thread.

Unless that concoction has blown his house up

I don't know, TBH! I didn't plant the trees. One tree gives greeny red apples that taste like pink ladies but are bigger. The other apples are greener and a bit less sharp.

As things stand, two of the three demijohns still have quite firm and stubborn foamy stuff at the top which I'm not convinced is right, so I may strain those before I add the yeast to hopefully lessen the chance of everything exploding

Sounds promising. That may settle, time will tell. Cider heads I know go for wild fermentation but you sound like you have it well organised. Keeps us updated with progress. Good luck
