Use the Rat Colosseum method Joseph.

No problem.

Get a metal dustbin and a humane rat trap.
Bait the trap with peanut butter and wait.

When you’ve caught a rat, put it in the dustbin and reset the trap. Provide water but no food in the dustbin.

Every time you catch a rat, deposit it alive in the dustbin. As the rats in the bin become hungry, a cannibalism instinct kicks in. It’ll be like the Royal Rumble in there.

After a few weeks when you’re left with only one rat, carefully release it back into the garden.

He will be the undefeated champion, he’ll be bigger, stronger and more vicious than all the other rats and has been existing on a diet of pure rat protein. He will also have a penchant for rat flesh, so will cannibalise any new rats that may stray into his territory.

Just keep him away from small children and family pets.

If you put poison down you need to put it in a bait box. You see them outs loads of commercial buildings. Dogs and cats won't be able to get at them. Don't leave poison uncovered or you'll get birds and all sorts.

BTW poison is reasonably humane. As I understand it, it thins their blood to the extent where they have a heart attack. And you shouldn't have a problem with them leaving chunks of it around. The poison comes in blocks with a hole. Inside the box there is a bar which goes through the hole. So they have to nibble it rather than carry it off.

A lot of rat poison is (or at least used to be) anticoagulants which means if they get a cut they're unable to heal and they slowly bleed to death

Maybe I've been taken in by advertising bollocks then. I don't actually use it anymore anyway and won't if they reappear. I'll be on the grassy knoll with my air rifle.
